Wednesday Wind Up

What am I reading?
The Black Moon, whichever Poldark novel that is.
I finished When Alice Met Danny on Sunday. It was a nice enough chick lit (written by a man, surprisingly enough!) but not absolutely fabulous. I'm searching for a really good aga saga, by which I mean one that has loads of descriptions of the house and countryside, with a maturer heroine and not one that rants on about the life of a single woman. I guess I'm after a Jilly Cooper circa Rivals or Polo, rather than Imogen. Any advice?

What have I watched this week?
Avengers Age of Ultron. And it was good. So good, that it inspired me to start my Christmas list for this year off. Yes, a mere 8 months to go and my list is being made.

Where have I been this week?
At school. Being a reader during SATs. This means that yesterday, today and tomorrow I have sat next to a child who needs the questions but can have no help with his answers or calculations. It is so frustrating in a way, because you sit there watching them make mistakes that you know they don't normally do and thinking to yourself that if you could just cough in the right place..... but you can't.
And the Dentists. I had a cracked tooth that caused me pain on Sunday and Monday. It's held together by glue, but I'm hoping that it will either be crowned, fixed or removed in a couple of weeks.

How has my spending gone this week?
Very well indeed! I am piling up as much cash as I can to see me through the summer drought and into September, just in case there is no place for me in the school. And I am actually sticking to the no spend days and no treat times. I put a starry smile in my diary every time I spend nothing and there are more days starred than not!

What are my WIPs this week?
My circles blanket. I want to photograph it in the daylight soon, but last weekend was ram-jam packed and didn't allow for breathing. This week is Christian Aid week, so we are busy giving out and collecting envelopes apart from work all day and into the evenings.

Any Other Business?
Yes! I need to get the photos from the Official Photographer, but we had a really pleasant family celebration on Sunday which I will tell you about at a later date.....

  1. We like a bit of Avengers here too, mind you anything with Robert Downey Jr has to be watched in my book!
Well done on the no spending days. I've been tracking my money this month. Since Oct and moving jobs my wages has dipped considerably. The amount I spend on food! I think I need to look at a few more vegetarian recipes.

    1. Aldi has made a big difference to me! I had a mad splurge last week when I bought a real magazine, but this week I have been a picture of propriety.

  2. Well done you on no spending days, I've made a vow not to buy any more wool or fabric until I get my current projects finished so my no spend days are going well! x

    1. No more wool..... I have all the wool I need for my project atthe moment, but I'm thinking I need more black and more red wool; I shall mark a wool day in my diary just to allow myself a purchase!

  3. I need a good aga saga too, and I know just what you mean about the "right" era of Jilly Cooper novels. Well done on your no spending days, you've got more will power than me. x

    1. It's funny, but I had a paradigm shift last month and thought of all the money I could save before the hols, with tutoring, birthday and the other slight money-making chances I have, and it just seemed sensible to go for it!

  4. Busy week! The circles blanket sounds interesting - would love to see some photos. My crochet has fallen by the wayside in the last couple of weeks but I'm keen to pick it up again - please keep inspiring me by talking about yours!

  5. That must be so hard, watching kids make mistakes when you know they know the answer. Did you see the letter Stalybridge School sent to their pupils before their SATS tests? I thought it was brilliant. Looking forward to hearing more about your family celebration.

    1. I saw that letter, Jo, it was great, just what a lot of kids need to hear. I'm not sure about aga sagas, but how about some Jackie Collins, Maeve Binchy or Helen Forrester?

  6. It's a shame you've not been able to perfect your telepathy skills in time for the SATs this year. Ah well, maybe next year! I was always quite partial to a Judy Astley novel; an early forerunner to Jill Mansell, I think, although her characters were more of the "Aga saga" style. Fun novels, not quite as racy as Jilly Cooper, but not bland either :-) xx

  8. I could do with a few no spend days although spending seems to come in fits and starts here - all or nothing. We're going an 'all' stage at the moment. Being a reader is hard work especially when the child looks at you for help. It's a struggle not to make any facial expressions, no nods, shakes, smiles, grimaces, eye rolls or raised eyebrows. All quite possibly as hard as taking the exam itself. xx

  9. Ah, I enjoyed your Wednesday wind up, somtimes at the end of a hectic week I think I'll treat myself to something, even just a magazine and then get a real buzz of pleasure when I dont, how strange is that! I would find that frustrating watching a child take an exam. Hope this week is good too!

    1. A pleasure can sometimes be better in anticipation than actuality. And things like magazines aren't as appealing to me as they once were; I think because I've emptied so much out of the house that I can't bear to see more coming in!
