Wednesday Wind Up

What am I reading this week?

Poldark, by Winston Graham. I picked it up (virtually speaking) this weekend and I have been enjoying it ever since. I'm looking forward to watching the series when it starts on Sunday.
I've also been reading The Way of the Happy Woman by Sara Avant Stover. It's a book about honouring my femininity and working in rhythm with the seasons, my life cycle and nature to achieve balance and harmony. It's heavy on Yoga and Buddhist tenets of meditation, but that's no bad thing in the modern world. If I can align myself a little more with the natural cycles of life (apparently I may be entering my perimenopausal phase and need to honour the passing of fertility and the approach of wisdom. I'll let you know if I have any wisdom at all when I find out) then  I may be a better and happier person. I'm enjoying reading it, and I have to say the chapter on periods was interesting. We so often feel obliged to rampage on with life and not let our monthlies stop us doing anything; is that a good or a bad thing? I know (when I was having proper periods, before my coil) that I was literally wiped out for two days a month, ready to sleep and do nothing. Thank God I was on supply after I had the children and they grew so much worse, and able to write off those days as days to stay at home and do little.

What have I watched this week?
Netflix. How did I not know about Netflix before? We have a load of boxsets and films that, for 30 days are available free and after that for £6.99 a month we can watch as much as we like on two devices, including our (apparently) smart TV. The Princess found Pretty Little Liars was on Netflix and talked me into it for a few months instead of investing in any more of the box sets. She watches PLL pretty nearly as much as she can, but I am planning a season of classier viewing. House of Cards, and then Suits. Oh, yeah baby, Bring.It.On.

Where have I been this week?
To Hack Green Nuclear Bunker. I wrote about that already. Aside from that I had a trip to Dunelm Mill for Mother's Day. That is, I went to buy for me, not my Mum. I'm going to take her out for Mother's Day, and treat her to afternoon tea.

How has my spending gone this week?
Pas mal. I haven't spent a lot, I have bought my own Mother's Day present but not a lot else.

What are my WIPs this week?
The circus blanket grows apace and in small pockets of time I have been making a little something to cheer up my fireplace over Easter.

Any Other Business?
Not really. I have plans to set up a homeblessing system, probably mostly based on the Flylady but I'm searching out ideas first and hoping to use some time this weekend to begin a binder for the house. I have an A5 Filofax Domino to set up, and some cute plans to do it.

  1. We don't have Netflix but we have discovered box sets on Sky - we're currently about 3 seasons into a 10 season run of The West Wing so we've got a bit of viewing to do! I remember reading the Poldark books years ago and watching some of the TV series. It'll be interesting to see what they do with the re-make. Good luck with your homeblessing system. I've used the Flylady system on and off for about 10 years and it generally works pretty well when I remember to do it! xx

    1. That;s my main problem with following systems, I need to remember to do them!
West Wing is brilliant, we watched it years ago and I still love to sit through an episode now and again. Such good writing!

  2. That's a good price for Netflix. We have Sky and can get box sets on there but I have to admit that I don't really bother with it, other than for films for my challenge at the moment. I have my favourite programmes and that's about it. I really must have a look at Flylady, I've heard so much about it.

    1. We have avoided Netflix for ages, on the grounds we have Sky sport and Movies, but quite a few of the series we want to watch are on it, so it's worth it for us. The Hubby and I need to have a House of Cards Season 3 binge watch soon. It's compulsive viewing when we start; 2 or 3 episodes a night and a need to finish it as soon as possible!

  3. I loved all the Poldark books when I was younger and have vague memories of the original series. I'm definitely going to settle down with a glass of wine on Sunday! Jx

    1. I might go for a glass of scrumpy.... or smuggled French brandy! And shall we meet up on Monday to discuss how good or bad it was?

  4. We don't have Netflix but we do have Sky and have a binge on box sets now and then. We're halfway through Wolf Hall and enjoying it. And we've got the last series Parks & Recreation ready to go after that. Ooh that Poldark chap above looks smouldering doesn't he? I'm definitely going to watch that.
I've used the Flylady system on and off since having children and have adapted it to suit our household.

    1. I tried the system some years ago, but signed up to have every blessed email not knowing they came through in American time, so were useless for me! Adapting it to suit will have to be the way to go, I've never tried it when working....

  5. We've had Netflix for a while. I don't use it, but the other 3 do and they get their money's work out of it for sure.
I tried Fly Lady years ago, I found Brocante Home the most useful thing I've ever used. It helped me set up routines which I stick to and I (mostly) enjoy Alison's style of writing. Unfortunately and very sadly she lost her mum very recently so I'm not sure if she's open for business at the mo.
I like the sound of the book you are reading, may have to see if it's at the library.

    1. I hadn't heard about Alison's Mum; when was that? I like a lot of her writing; it's a lot like Simple Abundance, isn't it?

  7. Can't wait for the new Poldark! Hope all is well chez nous - you've been pretty quiet for a week or so.
