Christmas isn't Christmas without.... An advent calendar

I'm going to try to post everyday in December (again) and to record my Christmas through the things that make Christmas special to me. I'll do my best! I'll tag them #christmasisn'tchristmaswithout and put the photos on Instagram as well (you can find me on there as angeljem5)

Today; well, for the 1st of December it must be advent calendars. I love them, I have loads, but every year I like to try out a different one. This year I treated myself to the Yankee Candle advent from Dobbies, every day a new tealight!

And today was the first of the 24; a lovely cinnamon heavy scent that is even now burning brightly in my present off my daughter, who spent last weekend in Germany on a school trip, haunting the markets and feasting on gingerbread.
She bought me a porcelain dome, with a small saucer beneath to hold the candle. When you light the flame it shines through the thinnest parts of the dome, giving a beautiful effect of light and shade.

Advent calendars weren't big when I was young, but I love them and appreciate the simple action of anticipation that they add to every day. When that first door (or sweet or candle or whatever...) is opened, then you know that Christmas is really coming; that the excitement can build and the season is properly starting. I hope you all have a happy advent and that the preparation for the feast itself goes well. May we all feel peace and calm as the month passes by.

  1. What a beautiful present. Sarah obviously has very good taste. Hope she enjoyed her time in Germany. We want to visit the markets in Manchester but we are fair weather creatures so no hope of that until the rain stops. Funny how many different advent calendars you can get buy apart from a traditional one, which I know I've been harping on about for ages! xx

    1. We meant to visit the markets in Manchester this year (we've been aiming to go for about 3 years now!) but December is always just so busy we never do get the time! One year..... one year we will go, by train and sip gluhwein under the pyramid!

  2. What a beautiful gift Sarah bought home for you, hope she had a fab trip.
We used to have the plain old paper advents when we were little, looking forwrd each day to see what the picture inside would be.
Did you get your the new Brocante download? Nothing on the site that I can see, checked my emails to find Alison has another issue with the site and to click on a link to take me to it, but the link just comes up with an error message! I've emailed her 3 times over the past two weeks because I had an extra paypal payment taken for my membership last month and I've heard nothing, I love her writing but I am seriously starting to get cheesed off with it all again.

    1. I have got the new planner, but no sign of House Rules! I'm seriously considering whether it's economically viable to be a member for next year, or whether I should cut my losses and run. How long can loyalty be tested?

Sarah loved her trip, and came back an inch taller, I think!

  3. What a beautiful gift and what a thoughtful daughter. I think you chose the perfect advent calendar this year, you won't be short of candles to burn in the dome. I'd love to visit the Christmas markets in Germany, I bet Sarah had a wonderful time.

    1. It was brilliant and I was absolutely jealous! I bought the calendar first, but I am obsessed with candles, Sarah says, so getting me a candle holder just made perfect sense! The candles are actually good value as well; last nights lasted a good 4 hours and still hasn't burnt out, so I may well have to either use one candle for more than a day, or have a pile of half burnt candles to use during Christmas and New Year!

  5. You certainly need an advent calendar and candles, so this is a great way to combine the two things! xx
